about
Coventry Carol is a 16th Century (or earlier) lullaby from The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors, a mystery play performed in the English city of Coventry. It is the haunting melody sung to the infants of Bethlehem before the Massacre of the Innocents.
This carol is a primary example of the "Picardy Cadence" - the major chord you can hear at the end of a melody primarily in minor mode. One simply cannot repeat the verses when this is the case, going from minor to major to minor again so quickly. This, as well as the rapidity of the chord changes caused me to stretch the phrases out in order to arpeggiate and fully hear each chord. Doing so gave the carol a longer, timeless feeling that I loved.
