I took the title from the chorus of the hymn “Angels We have Heard on High,”, translated in 1862 by James Chadwick from the traditional French carol “Les Anges dans nos campagnes.” As a child I loved singing this in the candlelight services on Christmas Eve. Today, it’s less to me about angels singing over a meadow and more of meditation on my past. The innocense of childhood Christmases seen through the lens of adulthood, and all of the complexity that comes with it is what infuses this new version for me.
