about

Ode to Joy is iconic. I love that it is so recognizeable. That’s what made me want to frame it in a way that was less recognizable. Hearing a familiar melody in an unfamiliar setting always gives me a sense of wonder, reminding me that the world is far different than I have ever though.

I kept the melody as is, but recast the chords of the third and fourth verses entirely. The choir sings the lyrics from the 2nd stanza by Henry van Dyke, written in 1907.

lyrics

All Thy works with joy surround Thee,
Earth and heav’n reflect Thy rays,
Stars and angels sing around Thee,
Center of unbroken praise.
Field and forest, vale and mountain,
Flow’ry meadow, flashing sea,
Singing bird and flowing fountain
Call us to rejoice in Thee.
