When I was a child I would find myself awake in the pre-dawn hours of Christmas morning. After making sure that no one else was up (particularly my parents), I would turn on the Christmas tree lights and sit in front of it, cross-legged and look up at the tree. Regardless of whether the presents were many or few (we had some years of each) I remember being filled with gratitude, with hope, and with a sense that all was right with the world for this one brief, quiet moment. I see now that those moments, year after year, were the beginning of the sense of what is sacred in my life.

“The Holly and the Ivy” has always reminded me of those times in front of the tree. And in framing this melody in a minor key, I hoped to capture some of the uncertain wonder that waits at the edges of these experiences as I’ve grown older. Like the contrasting note that deepens the scent of perfume, so it is with sacred moments. They become ever sweeter for all that is unknowable.
